Should There Be A Limit To Media Freedom?

Freedom of the press is important because it plays an important role in the informing citizens about public affairs and in tracking the state's actions, at least at a certain level. Freedom of expression includes freedom of speech but it also gives individual and community the right to express their opinions without fear of retribution, censorship or punishment. New forms of media, such as the Internet, have created more problems for media freedom.

Freedom of expression is a human right in the form of Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is a fundamental right that enables citizens to speak freely and without interference. Freedom of speech and expression are enshrined in Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, Article 13 of the American Convention on Human Rights and Article 9 of the African Charter of Human and Peoples' Rights.

This right includes the freedom to express opinions, receive and disseminate information and ideas without interference from public authorities, regardless of borders. International, regional, and national norms recognize freedom of speech and expression to include all media, whether written, printed, on the Internet, or in an art form. Article 19 of the UDHR says that everyone has the right to "express opinions without interference" and that "the right to freedom of expression itself is part of the freedom to seek, receive and disseminate information or ideas without boundaries, whether in writing, in print, in art or in any other medium of their choice".

The media are regarded as the fourth pillar of democracy and are the cornerstone of the smooth functioning of a country. The concept of media freedom recognises that the media in a modern society consist of more than just print sources. The media in India enjoy a high degree of freedom, and when threatened, the reaction is loud.

It is not a freedom because it is abused, but in India the freedom of the press is treated as part of the free speech and expression guaranteed in Article 19 (1) (a), but appropriate restrictions can be imposed in the interests of the country's sovereignty and integrity in accordance with Article 19 (2). Freedom of the press is not absolute freedom, and today the media have forgotten that, and every day we see how they show our defensive strength in the way we have a lot of equipment. Fundamental rights are the backbone of a well-managed democratic society, and the right to add value to the entire functioning of the system is one of the so-called freedoms' and this right is one of the most important tools for management of a democratic society, because it is a right to freedom of speech and expression where the state and the individual can share their views without reasonable restrictions.

The right to freedom of expression and expression that states that anyone can freely share his or her views with reasonable restrictions is an essential right in any democracy and is granted to the Indian people in accordance with Article 19(1) a) of the Indian constitution. It maintains in principle the freedom of thought and expression provided for in the preamble. In other words, freedom of expression is necessary because absolute freedom without controls entails deformity, because it has no substance.

Supporters of the school believe that
unregulated media can destabilize a country's socio-political environment and that state intervention can jeopardize freedom of expression. The rise of terrorism and the growing concern of the state have led governments to adopt a protectionist stance to prevent the dissemination of sensitive information through the media. There is more scope for criticism of public figures involved.
